Frailty is a geriatric syndrome with a tremendous impact on the older individual, their family, and society as a whole. The components of frailty are a mixture of physiological, psychological, social and environmental factors (for example, sarcopenia, functional impairment, cognitive impairment, and depression). Physical exercise may affect all these factors. Thus, we aimed to determine whether life-long spontaneous exercise was a good strategy to prevent frailty in a mouse model. Our major problem was the lack of a test for frailty in experimental animals. Although the clinical interest in frailty has grown in recent years [47], research in experimental animal models of frailty is very rare. The most commonly used test for frailty is that of Linda Fried and co-workers [7]. They concluded that frailty is a combination of five components: unintentional weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slow running speed and a decrease in physical activity. Based on this work, three functional tests were performed on our mice at six different survival time points (See Figure 2). We found that as the animals grew older, they showed poorer results in the tests that determined healthspan: grip strength (Panel A), motor coordination (Panel B) and aerobic exercise capacity (Panel C). Mice that had free access to running wheels performed significantly better than the sedentary animals in all the tests.

I am a 32 year old female so reading some of the comments from the older ladies doesn’t fill me with much confidence at all. My hip bursitis started after a very painful pregnancy a few years ago and was made worse after my latest pregnancy as the bursitis was missed. I have hip dysplasia which unfortunately had not been picked up until I met with my orthopedic surgeon a couple of months ago and he is brilliant! After years of being in pain and suffering terrible during the pregnancies I was referred to rheumatology, gynecology, spinal orthopedics then eventually hip orthopedics after the above failed to find a problem. The cause of my bursitis came from a very severe case of SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) during pregnancy and the pressure from my dislocated pelvis caused the inflammation resulting in GTD (gestational trophoblastic disease). Physiotherapy has failed to be much use although my physiotherapist has been with me since pregnancy and is amazing, so my hip surgeon suggested cortisone injections in both hips whilst under x-ray to ensure the injection hit the right spot. I’ve just had those injections and they were not as painful as I expected, they felt a little like an epidural needle, for those ladies who have ever had one of those. I’m hoping they work and I’ll be reviewed in 6 weeks in clinic. I feel having an experienced and sympathetic care provider is the first stage to getting the right treatment. If you’re not happy with the treatment you’re getting then demand a second opinion. It’s taken me 4 years now to finally get a diagnosis and treatment but it is out there! I’m looking forward to reading more of your experiences and I hope you all get some relief. I’ll keep you all posted on next stages of my treatment plan!

I do have a specific problem and would like to know if I am the only one. I am in the second week of month 1 of Insanity. I do not follow the nutritional plan, I am trying to do my own healthy meal plan. The problem I am facing is that I am not able to eat the amount of calories I am suppoosed to. For example, I am supposed to eat around 1900 calories a day, but in the evening I still have 200-300 left. I eat often, small portions. I am just not hungry, do I need to force myself to eat all that calories to fulfill the needs of my body or is it ok to eat less?
