General Information Thank you for writing this clear, well thought out article. I have found it useful. I am a 32 year old female so reading some of the comments from the older ladies doesn’t fill me with much confidence at all. My hip bursitis started after a very painful pregnancy a few years ago and was made worse after my latest pregnancy as the bursitis was missed. I have hip dysplasia which unfortunately had not been picked up until I met with my orthopedic surgeon a couple of months ago and he is brilliant! After years of being in pain and suffering terrible during the pregnancies I was referred to rheumatology, gynecology, spinal orthopedics then eventually hip orthopedics after the above failed to find a problem. The cause of my bursitis came from a very severe case of SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) during pregnancy and the pressure from my dislocated pelvis caused the inflammation resulting in GTD (gestational trophoblastic disease). Physiotherapy has failed to be much use although my physiotherapist has been with me since pregnancy and is amazing, so my hip surgeon suggested cortisone injections in both hips whilst under x-ray to ensure the injection hit the right spot. I’ve just had those injections and they were not as painful as I expected, they felt a little like an epidural needle, for those ladies who have ever had one of those. I’m hoping they work and I’ll be reviewed in 6 weeks in clinic. I feel having an experienced and sympathetic care provider is the first stage to getting the right treatment. If you’re not happy with the treatment you’re getting then demand a second opinion. It’s taken me 4 years now to finally get a diagnosis and treatment but it is out there! I’m looking forward to reading more of your experiences and I hope you all get some relief. I’ll keep you all posted on next stages of my treatment plan!

I will most definitely take your repeated recommendations to rest and also use the self care (exercises and SLAM) that you have provided. It all just make sense. I am in my 5th session of weekly PT (daily exercises and icing) and have found some relief from the pain (especially pain felt when standing) but I sense that once the PT stops the pain will return. Your recommendations seem more conducive to long-term relief so I intend to follow your advice to the letter. Please respond specifically about the use of stairs while in this healing process. If stairs are detrimental to the healing process, I will not use them. Also please provide your thoughts on icing to manage the inflammation. Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Assuming you have plain ol’ garden-variety GTB, which you probably don’t, then be sure you’re doing my S.L.A.M. program. Be sure you’re modifying activities which are painful. Consider injections if recommended by your doc. There is an operation for GTB, but it’s still not guaranteed to relieve your pain totally and forever! And as I said, that’s assuming it’s GTB. Be sure before ever considering anything operative. Your doc would be the one to help you with that process.

At the same time, research has mounted suggesting active therapies (exercise programs, yoga, tai chi) can really help people work through back pain, and alternative approaches (massage, spinal manipulation) can be effective, too — with the caveat that they’re often no panacea and the effects tend to be short-lived and moderate.
    A preliminary semi-structured interview guide was developed, following a literature review, by the researchers and an ex-shoulder patient (Table  2). Participants were invited to participate in in-depth semi-structured interviews at a time and venue of their choice. 18/20 interviews were held at participants home and two at conference meeting rooms between September 2012-April 2013. Participants were from across England and Wales, achieving a wide geographical and urban/rural spread. Visits ranged from 50 minutes to two and a half hours in duration, with taped interviews ranging from 28–101 minutes (average 45 minutes). Time was spent after the interviews in everyday conversation, allowing the interviewer (CML) to check the well being of the interviewee [18]; interviews did not cause obvious distress. Interviews were digitally audio recorded and transcribed. Field notes, memos and a reflexive diary were recorded throughout. Participants were posted a summary of their transcript, providing opportunity to check quotations and views and remove anything with which they did not feel comfortable (member checking). No participant withdrew information, several added additional update comments or something they had remembered post-interview.

    Eric_Ricchetti,_MD: Feeling pain in the deltoid is common when there is a rotator cuff problem. It is a referred pain. The best exercises are those targeting the rotator cuff muscles, deltoid, and shoulder blade muscles. Push-up and press-type exercises are often aggravating to the shoulder.

    I thought I would get a woman doctor’s perspective and also because you have had it. And dealing with my male doctors they just don’t get how much pain I am in and how debilitating it is.
    You’ll often see a similar problem on a similar exercise, the lat pulldown. Older women especially tend to pull the bar down toward their abdomen, rather than pulling it in toward their upper chest.     Some patients tolerate the shots better than others. They are more likely to come back and get them again. And there’s really no downside to getting them, unless you have diabetes. But I don’t have to use much cortisone and patients with diabetes rarely report problems with their sugar afterward.   13. Your situation is very concerning, and unfortunately too complex for me to deal with over my blog. Your symptoms indicate something much more complex than greater trochanteric bursitis. Rarely do patients with GTB require pain medications. Nor does it ever result in the inability to walk. Please continue to seek consultation from your local specialists: orthopedic surgeons or physiatrists. Your primary care physician might not feel comfortable prescribing these medications or treating your condition because of its complexity.

    I have been prescribed prescription anti-inflammatories, (which are ineffective), had a cortisone shot (which resulted in a flare up and was ineffective) and prescribed tramadol for pain (which I can’t take because it causes me to hallucinate). A new orthopedic has prescribed physical therapy which I honestly have serious doubts about its usefulness at this stage. I’ve had increased pain and swelling after sessions but I have only been going for 2 weeks.
