When looking at the Acute : Chronic workload ratio, we look at the total volume performed by the athlete over the past Week, and divide that by the total volume over the past 4 weeks. What we would like to see is a ratio between 0.8 – 1.3. That means this past week’s volume has either been slightly decreased (0.8) or increased (1.3) compared to what the athlete is physiologically adapted to. If that ratio comes out to be a 1.5 or higher, this is an acute spike in training volume that puts them at a much higher risk of injury2.
