Social Security Media Relations If you are self proclaimed to be a true bodybuilder or powerlifter, then you will have experienced some sort of shoulder problem or injury. They can be chronic and debilitating if not taken care of. How do I know? I have been wrestling with a rotator cuff problem for the past three years. Just recently, this condition has resurfaced to plague my training once again. After an informative trip to the doctor's office, I will share with you some of the things that I learned.

After we get the pain down to a 2-3/10, the next phase in tendinopathy treatment is to gradually LOAD the tendon. Unfortunately, pain will be the best way to assess the loading strategy during this phase as well. We need to SLIGHTLY INCREASE pain in the tendon to ensure we are loading enough to cause a healing response, without aggravating it too much and causing a setback. Greg Lehman puts it best (although with slightly different wording):
Steroid injections into the joint can ease some shoulder problems. The steroid is usually given with a local anaesthetic to ease the pain. You should find your shoulder pain improves quite quickly.

Sometimes this is caused by actual soft tissue damage or inflammation. More often, I find it’s caused by weakness or poor activation in the muscles of the back that stabilize the shoulder. If your traps and rhomboids aren’t strong enough to hold your shoulders back, your upper arm will pitch forward and compress the tissues on the front of your shoulder. Boom, anterior shoulder pain. This can happen even if you don’t start from extension like you would in a bench press or push up. It can even happen when rowing if you’re upper-trap dominant.
Robert Hayden, D.C., Ph.D., and spokesperson for the American Chiropractic Association, says using a backpack is one of the smartest, easiest decisions I could make, especially because I was already seeing such noticeable fitness deficits. “I have seen patients who carry loads on a shoulder to the point of producing curvatures in the chest,” he explains. “In a worst-case scenario, if left untreated, there could be an injury to the nerves in that arm, which can result in numbness and tingling in the hand, and possibly loss of muscle strength. Additionally, there may be alignment issues that affect the function of the shoulder joint.”

And the crazy thing is…this almost never the athlete’s fault! We receive messages and requests for more information on how to prevent and deal with tendinopathy all the time, so hopefully this will help many of you, and your athletes, get back to smashing goals and PR’s.

10 of 11 HI Hakim. I don’t mind sharing at all. The first source I would go to is the EduRep model (cited below). As for the exercises and eccentric training, there are numerous excellent articles out there, and I’ve pulled what I believe are the best exercises and made my own list. What is worth exploring in the future is the newer concept of using isometrics instead of eccentrics early in the rehab process (this I haven’t yet seen good comparison studies). Let me know if you would like more detail with the other studies and I can gladly point you in the right direction.

When I try to bench press/dumbell press, my elbow seems to lose power and it gives way. There is no pain or soreness, no anything. It just gets weaker as I try to press the weight. Some trainers think it could be my elbow but some seem to think it could be my shoulder causing the weakening in my elbow. Any thoughts on what it could be and possible remedies on what I can do to regain full power back in my elbow?
